In Belarus, 13 people were detained in the case of strikes at enterprises
ONT: Belarusian security forces detained 13 people who were preparing strikes at enterprises
The State Security Committee of Belarus has detained 13 activists of the so-called opposition “Labor Movement”, whose goals were to stop large enterprises in the country and strike, the state television ONT reported on Sunday.
The opposition considers Svetlana Tikhanovskaya to be the winner of the 2020 presidential election. Tikhanovskaya, who left for Lithuania, is a defendant in criminal cases and is included in the list of persons involved in terrorist activities. Minsk is seeking her extradition, but Vilnius has refused. The opposition calls for strikes at factories, attempts to organize a strike were made at a number of large factories after the presidential elections, but the authorities say that the real sector is working normally. Earlier, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko demanded from the government to prevent a drop in industrial performance under Western sanctions, praised officials for the measures taken to minimize the impact of restrictions, but urged to take into account that there were workers at the factories who were “submitting information” to the West. According to him, it was possible to figure out several such Western informants, they “will sit down, and for a long time”, but only a few remained among the employees of the factories.
“A criminal case has been initiated under several articles of the Criminal Code: treason to the state and the creation of an extremist group. 13 people have been placed in the KGB pre-trial detention center. Most of them have already given confessions,” the TV channel said.
According to him, the “Labor Movement” is an informal initiative created in April 2021 by Tikhanovskaya’s headquarters “with the support of foreign diasporas under the control of American and Lithuanian special services.” The TV channel claims that the objectives of the initiative were to attract employees of enterprises and organizations to participate, organize strikes, and industrial espionage.
“There were three main areas of activity: collecting information about the work of enterprises, contracts, how the industry works under Western sanctions. The second is sabotage. If the workers did not go on strike, for example,” Grodno Azot ” emergency shutdown of production. Third – threats to the leadership, officials, security forces, “- said the channel. According to him, stopping scenarios were developed for each flagship of the Belarusian industry, in particular, the Naftan Oil Refinery, the Belarusian Metallurgical Plant, the Minsk Automobile Plant, the Minsk Wheel Tractor Plant, as well as for the Belarusian Railway.
The TV channel reported that the investigation obtained evidence of cooperation between the Labor Movement and other extremist organizations recognized in Belarus, for example, Baypol, which consists of former law enforcement officials. It is stated that the participants of the initiative met regularly in Zoom conferences, discussed plans and tasks, and, according to the TV channel, Tikhanovskaya and her advisor were involved in the discussion.
After the presidential elections held in Belarus on August 9, 2020, in which Lukashenka won for the sixth time, massive opposition protests began in the country. On February 11, the KGB of Belarus announced that the manifestations of protests had practically disappeared. In Belarus, criminal cases have been initiated against a number of opposition leaders, including calls for the seizure of power, the creation of an extremist group, a conspiracy to seize state power by unconstitutional means, and an attempted terrorist attack. Lukashenka accused the West of direct interference in the situation in the republic, noted that the unrest is directed by the United States, and the Europeans “play along” with it.
