Why didn’t Biden see fit to meet with Abbas?
Experts are wondering why US President Joe Biden did not meet with the head of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas at the UN General Assembly. It is possible that the matter is in a change of priorities – after the failure in Afghanistan, now there is no time for an Israeli-Palestinian settlement.
Before traveling to New York for the UN General Assembly, the head of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, tried to arrange a meeting with Biden. However, after the White House turned him down, he did not go to the United States. This is reported by Axios, citing American and Palestinian sources.
The US presidential administration said that Biden will not hold any bilateral meetings in New York. However, the American leader managed to talk with the British Prime Minister and the heads of the Quartet, which, in addition to the United States, includes India, Australia and Japan. True, Biden moved the negotiations to the White House.
As for Abbas, it is clearly not up to him today. Axios suggested that the refusal to meet with the head of the Palestinian Authority is due to the fact that the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations are not among Biden’s main priorities. Although, speaking at the UN General Assembly, the US President did not ignore this topic and again spoke in favor of the creation of two states in Israel. According to Biden, it is this principle of the coexistence of two peoples that will best solve the conflict, which has been going on for more than 70 years.
True, as the US President noted, “we are still far from this goal.” Perhaps that is why he did not become necessary to meet with Abbas, since it makes no sense to discuss what has already been said many times. Moreover, this position is often criticized by Israeli and Palestinian politicians. In addition, Biden is now more worried about the situation in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of the American military from there. He also mentioned this in his speech to the General Assembly, noting that the United States, having withdrawn from Afghanistan, “ended the era of endless wars and began the era of tireless diplomacy.”
Many took this as an excuse for the hasty American withdrawal from Afghanistan. After the withdrawal of troops, criticism against Biden simply went off scale and now he somehow needs to rehabilitate himself and raise his rating to the previous level. After the Taliban * came to power in the Islamic republic, the popularity of the US president fell from 53 percent to 46 percent.
So now, apparently, there really is no time for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As for Mahmoud Abbas, he had no choice but to address the General Assembly with a video message in which he said that “Israel has only a year to return to the 1967 borders.” According to him, if this is not done, “the Palestinians will appeal to the International Court of Justice in The Hague.” At a face-to-face meeting, these threats had to be answered with something, otherwise they could be left unanswered.
