IFJ urged not to use the media as “football” amid the situation with RT DE and DW
The International and European Federation of Journalists called on the authorities not to use the media as “political football”, a statement published on the organization’s website.
The statement was made against the backdrop of the cessation of broadcasting of the RT DE television channel in Germany and the response to this in the form of the closure of the Moscow office of the Deutsche Welle television channel.
“The International and European Federation of Journalists called on the authorities not to use the media as political football and to protect the right to receive information,” the statement said.
On February 1, the Commission for Registration and Supervision of Media Regulators of Germany officially banned the broadcasting of the RT DE TV channel in Germany, stating that the broadcast organizers did not have the necessary permission. RT DE Productions is appealing the decision of the German regulator in court. The Russian Foreign Ministry explained that the TV channel operated on the basis of a license issued by Serbia and in full compliance with the European Convention on Transfrontier Television, to which Germany is also a party.
The Foreign Ministry said that it was starting to implement retaliatory measures against German media accredited in Russia, as well as Internet intermediaries who arbitrarily and unreasonably deleted the channel’s accounts from their platforms.
